Winfield to Newton

From the 9,294 ft. siding at WN Junction (MP 249.7), where South Kansas & Oklahoma lines head east and west, an erstwhile MoPac line once crossed on the flat, and the former Santa Fe line to Augusta, on the Transcon, heads north, the former Santa Fe line to Mulvane, Wichita and Newton heads north-northwest, single track, CTC, speed limit 30 mph, turning north past MP 247.5, where the speed limit rises to 55 mph, north-northwest, gradually curving around to just east of due north, with a speed restriction of 45 mph on curves between MP 246.2 and MP 243.2, turning curvily north-northwest past Dale, a speed restriction of 45 mph for crossings between MP 238.2 and MP 237.6, the 6,156 ft. siding at Udall (MP 237.9), and a detector at MP 236.5, and then curvily northwest, with a speed restriction of 40 mph on curves between MP 229.8 and MP 227.7.

The line passes beneath a bridge carrying the former Santa Fe Emporia sub. line from the west coast, between Wellington and Augusta, and turns north at the 15,184 ft. siding at Mulvane (MP 227.8), where a connector from that line trails in from the south (i.e., on the west side), an erstwhile Santa Fe line once headed west, and a connector to the Emporia sub, heads away northeast, as the line turns just west of due north, along the valley of the Arkansas River, past the 6,872 ft. siding at Derby (MP 223.0), a speed restriction of 45 mph on crossings between MP 223.0 and MP 222.5, a detector at MP 220.0, the 6,616 ft. siding at Connell (MP 217.4), where a spur trails in from the Boeing Plant to the east, and another spyur heads away east to McConnell AFB, a speed restriction of 45 mph on crossings between MP 215.6 and MP 214.9, a speed restriction of 45 mph on curves between MP 215.5 and MP 215.3, a speed restriction of 40 mph on crossings between MP 214.9 and MP 207.7 (through Wichita), and a speed restriction of 30 mph on curves between MP 213.3 and MP 211.7.

Two Main Tracks, CTC, start at South Junction (MP 213.2), where a former Rock Island line trails in from the south and a connector from a former MoPac line trails in from the west, once also connecting with two other erstwhile Santa Fe lines, with speed limit 30 mph, on a line owned by the Wichita Union Terminal Railway heading north past Wichita Union Station (MP 212.3) and a wye on the east side with the former Frisco line east to Augusta at North Junction (MP 211.7), where the WUT line ends and a stretch of Double Track, Automatic Block Signals, Yard Limits, starts, with speed limit 55 mph, past  a speed restriction of 40 mph on curves between MP 210.6 and MP 209.6, a junction (and former flat crossing with a former MoPac line coming from the south-southwest) with the former MoPac line heading northeast, the former Rock Island line heading north-northeast, and the former Frisco heading north, at UP Xing (MP 210.1), 30 mph on the crossing/junction, where the former SAnta Fe turns just west of due north, and then north again.

There is a former Santa Fe yard at Wichita (MP 209.1), ending at MP 207.9, where single track, CTC, resumes, and the line turns north-northwest, with the former Frisco coming alongside to the east, past a speed restriction of 45 mph on crossings between MP 202.0 and MP 201.1, the 6,710 ft. siding and Junction (former flat crossing) with the former Frisco at Valley Center (MP 201.8), 50 mph on the crossing, where the former Frisco once continued west-northwest and the erstwhile Arkansas Valley Interurban once ran alongside to the west, a detector at MP 195.7, a speed restriction of 30 mph on crossings between MP 195.6 and MP 194.5, the 7,526 ft. siding at Sedgwick (MP 195.2), where the line turns north-northeast, the 6,628 ft. siding at Putnam (MP 191.2), and McGraw (MP 188.0), where the line splits, with one line heading north, across the former route of the erstwhile AVIR, to Sand Creek, where it trails into the south side of the former Santa Fe passenger transcon, heading northeast, and the other heading for a similar junction with that same line at First Street.

There are crossovers between the Two Main Tracks, CTC, of the passenger transcon at Sand Creek (MP 186.7), a speed restriction of 40 mph on curves between MP 186.7 and MP 185.7 a small yard at Rail Mill (MP 186.1), crossovers at First Street (MP 185.6), where Three Main Tracks, CTC, start, and the speed limit falls to 20 mph, and Newton (MP 185.1), where there is an Amtrak depot.
