New Haven to New London/Groton

From the four-island platform passenger station with depot to the northwest at New Haven (MP 72.3), where passenger trains headed for the Springfield line switch from electric to diesel haulage (and those for Boston did until 2000), with both Amtrak and Metro-North shops on the southeast side of the line, MP 72.5, where the speed limit for passenger trains also falls to 10 mph, crossovers at Fair Street (MP 72.7), the passenger station with two island platforms at State Street, the Division Post (MP 72.8), where Metro-North ownership ends and Amtrak ownership starts, two road bridges overhead, a pedestrian bridge overhead, four road bridges overhead, and the junction at Mill River (MP 73.6), where the double track, CTC, Springfield line continues northeast and the double track, CTC, overhead electrified Boston line turns sharply south and speed limits rise to 70/20, past the bridge over the river, turning southeast past crossovers, a box on the south side labeled Mill River, a bridge over a street, a road bridge overhead, I-95 bridges overhead, a road bridge overhead, a bridge over an inlet, I-95 bridges overhead, and crossovers at Shore Line Junction (MP 75.2), where the freight line from Cedar Hill Yard used to trail in from the north and the freight speed limit on Track 2 rises to 25 mph.

The line turns east past a bridge over a road, an arched road bridge overhead, a cutting, a tunnel, East Haven, MP 77.0, where the freight speed limit rises to 40 mph, signals, a box on the south side labeled MP 77.5, I-95 bridges overhead, a divided highway to the south, two road bridges overhead, an inlet on the south side, a road bridge overhead, detectors at MP 79.0, a bridge over a stream, a bridge over a road, a bridge over a stream, a road bridge overhead, the passenger station with two side platforms at Branford (MP 81.5), MP 82.0, where the speed limit rises to 90/45 on Track 1 and 80/40 on Track 2, a road bridge overhead, a bridge over a road, crossovers, a bridge over a road, a bridge over a river, a box on the south side labeled Pave, where a track leaves on the north side and then, after a road bridge overhead, curves to pass beneath the line.

There is a turn east-southeast, past a rocky cutting, a road bridge overhead, a bridge over a river, a rocky cutting, another cutting, a bridge over a river, a bridge over a street, and a bridge over a road, a turn east-northeast past a road bridge overhead, a bridge over a stream, a bridge over a road, a road bridge overhead, and the passenger station with two side platforms at Guilford (MP 88.9), with extra track on the south side, and a turn east again, past crossovers at East River, a bridge over a stream, a bridge over a river, crossovers, a box on the south side labeled 93.1, and the passenger station with two side platforms at Madison (MP 93.1), a road bridge overhead, a road alongside to the south, a bridge over a road, and a road bridge overhead.

The speed limit becomes 85/50 on both tracks at MP 95.0, past a street alongside to the south, two bridges over roads, a road bridge overhead, a bridge over a river, two bridges over streams, a rail-served industry to the south, the passenger station with two side platforms at Clinton (MP 96.7), a bridge over a road, a bridge over a stream, three road bridges overhead, a bridge over a river, a box on the south side labeled 98.6, a road bridge overhead, a box on the south side labeled 100.4, two bridges over streams, MP 101.0, where the passenger speed limit rises to 90 mph on both tracks, the passenger station with two side platforms at Westbrook (MP 101.2), a road bridge overhead, MP 102.0, and two road bridges overhead.

There is a turn east-northeast past a rail-served industry on the south side, extra track on the south side, a bridge over a stream, the wye junction on the north side  at Brook (MP 103.6), where the Valley Railroad departs and there is an extra track (speed limit 15/10) as far as Old Saybrook, a box labeled "104.2" on the south side, a box labeled "Saybrook" on the south side, the passenger station with south side depot and platform and north side island platform, with footbridge, at Old Saybrook (MP 105.1), where the freight speed limit is 45 mph on Track 1 and 20 mph on Track 2, with the latter rising to 30 mph east of here, a road bridge overhead, a turn to the northeast, old bridge abutments for an erstwhile overhead bridge, woods giving way to coastal marshland, signals, and a turn back to the east.

The line passes signals protecting the west end of the bridge and crosses the Connecticut River on the multi-span (five fixed to the west, one moveable, two fixed to the east) through truss movable bridge at Conn (MP 106.8), with the road bridge alongside to the north, where the speed limit is 75/40 on Track 1 and 75/20 on Track 2, rising to 75/40 and 75/50 to its east, passing marshes and woods intermixed, an angled road bridge overhead, and a bridge over an angled road, and turns east-southeast, past Lyme & Black Hall, detectors at MP 107.9, a bridge over a stream, and detectors at MP 109.0, where the freight speed limit on Track 1 rises to 50 mph, and then east-northeast, past a bridge over a road, a cutting, a road bridge overhead, East Lime, Point (MP 115.0), a bridge over a road, MP 115.8, where the freight speed limit on Track 2 drops to 20 mph, a cove with the beach along the south side of the line, a bridge over a road, a cutting, a bridge over a road, a road bridge overhead, and the beach alongside to the south again.

There is a through truss movable bridge over the Nantic River at Nan (MP 116.7), where the speed limit is 60/30 on Track 1 and 60/40 on Track 2, with the freight speed on Track 1 rising to 40 mph to its east to Millstone, a road bridge overhead, and a box labeled "118.7" on the south side, with the line turning east-southeast past Waterford (MP 119.7), a line trailing in on the south side, the road crossing at Miners Lane (MP 120.2), a box "120" on the south side, two road bridges overhead, a box "121.5" on the south side, and a bridge over a road, and then sweeping around to the north-northeast, past the through truss movable bridge at Shaws Cove, where the speed limit drops to 25 mph, the junction with the former Central Vermont angling away on the east side at Shaws Cove (MP 122.5), the road crossing at Bank Street (MP 122.5), a deck girder bridge over State Street (MP 122.8), extra track on the south side, and the passenger station with two side platforms and umbrella sheds, and depot on the north side, at New London (MP 122.9).

There is extra track on the south side of the south platform, a track curving away to the east (the current connection to the former Central Vermont?), and the road crossing at Governor Winthrop Boulevard (MP 123.0), turning north-northwest, and climbing as it turns east bridging over a road as it does so, bridging over  the former CV line (two separate lines and then a road) on a deck girder bridge, and then across the Thames River on a multi-span (two fixed spans to the west, the moveable span, and four fixed spans to the east) through truss movable bridge, past a bridge over a culvert, to the wye junction with the Providence & Worcester's Norwich Line on the north side at Groton (MP 124.2).
