New London/Groton to Providence

From the junction with the former Central Vermont angling away on the east side at Shaws Cove (MP 122.5), the road crossing at Bank Street (MP 122.5), a deck girder bridge over State Street (MP 122.8), extra track on the south side, and the passenger station with two side platforms and umbrella sheds, and depot on the north side, at New London (MP 122.9), and extra track on the south side of the south platform, a track curving away to the east (the current connection to the former Central Vermont?), and the road crossing at Governor Winthrop Boulevard (MP 123.0), turning north-northwest, and climbing as it turns east bridging over a road as it does so, bridging over  the former CV line (two separate lines and then a road) on a deck girder bridge, and then across the Thames River on a multi-span (two fixed spans to the west, the moveable span, and four fixed spans to the east) through truss movable bridge, past a bridge over a culvert, to the wye junction with the Providence & Worcester's Norwich Line on the north side at Groton (MP 124.2), the double track, CTC, overhead electrified Boston line spawns a short segment of extra track (Track 4), with speed limit 60/30 on Track 1, 60/35 on Track 2 and 30/25 on Track 4.

The line turns south-southeast, past a road bridge overhead, MP 127.0, where the speed limit rises to 70/40 on Track 1 and 70/50 on Track 2, a bridge over a road, a spur heading away south, a spur trailing in from the south, a cove alongside to the south, extra track on the south side (beyond Track 4), detectors at MP 127.8, and Palmers Cove (MP 128.1), where a spur to Soneco Quarry heads away southwest, Track 4 ends and the freight speed limit rises to 45 mph on Track 1 and drops to 35 mph on Track 2, northeast, past a road bridge overhead, signals at Noark, bridges over an inlet, and turns south-southeast, with an inlet to the south, and then east, past a road crossing at School Street (MP 131.2), and another inlet to the south, northeast past West Mystic and the through truss movable bridge at Mystic River (MP 131.9), southeast past a grade crossing, and the passenger station with platform and shelter to the south at Mystic (MP 132.3), where the freight speed limit rises to 50 mph.

There is an inlet to the south, a box "132.9" to the south, a grade crossing, a box "133" to the south, a deck girder bridge over a culvert, a road crossing at Latimer Point Road (MP 133.4),  Long Island Sound alongside to the south, a box to the south, a road bridge overhead, a grade crossing, and a box to the south, with the line turning east past Lord (MP 134.8), a deck girder bridge over another inlet, a closed road crossing at Wamphassuck (MP 134.9),  a road bridge overhead, a footbridge overhead, an inlet to the south, a grade crossing, that same inlet to the south again, a road bridge overhead, Stonington, a road crossing at Walkers Dock (MP 136.6), a road crossing at Freemans (MP 136.7), a box to the south, and a road bridge overhead.

The line turns just north of due east, past MP 137.0, where the passenger speed limit rises to 80 mph on both tracks and the freight speed limit drops to 40 mph on Track 1, a road crossing at Palmer Street (MP 140.6),  a street alongside to the south, a bridge over a road, the Connecticut-Rhode Island line (MP 141.1), a bridge over a river, the passenger station, with platform with umbrella shed and depot to the south, at Westerly (MP 141.3), a road bridge overhead, a box "141.6" to the south, High Street (MP 141.7), where the freight speed limit drops to 20 mph on Track 1, a road bridge overhead, and a formerly rail-served warehouse to the south, turning east-northeast past MP 142.0, where the freight speed limit on Track 1 rises to 50 mph, a road bridge overhead, signals, and marshland.

The passenger speed limit rises to 85 mph on both tracks and the freight speed limit drops to 45 mph on Track 1 at Bradford (MP 146.0), past a road bridge overhead and a bridge over a stream, as the line turns northeast, past a road bridge overhead, Wood River Junction (MP 150.0), where a line to Hope Valley once headed north, extra track on the south side, a bridge over a stream, Shamrock, MP 152.0, where the speed limits change to 80/50 on Track 1 and 80/45 on Track 2, a road bridge overhead, two bridges over streams, a road bridge overhead, a works to the east, Kenyons, where the line turns north-northeast, a road bridge overhead, detectors at MP 154.3, MP 155.0, where the passenger speed limit on Track 1 rises to 100 mph, a dirt road alongside to the south, the passenger station with two side platforms, a footbridge, and wooden two-storey depot to the south, at Kingston (MP 158.1), where the speed limits on Track 2 rise to 100/50, a road bridge overhead, signals, a bridge over a culvert, signals at MP 160.x,  and a closed road crossing at Wolf Rocks Road (MP 160.3).

The line turns just east of due north, past MP 161.0, where the passenger speed limit rises to 110 mph on Track 1, a road bridge overhead, a pond to the east, Slocum, MP 163.0, where the passenger speed limit drops to 100 mph on Track 1 and rises to 110 mph on Track 2, a road alongside to the east, four road bridges overhead, Wickford Junction (MP 165.9), where a line once trailed in from the east and a third track starts from March 5, 2012, a bridge over a road, Stony (MP 166.5), a new interlocking from March 5, 2012, where the thrid track ends,a road bridge overhead, MP 168.0, where the passenger speed limit on Track 2 reverts to 100 mph, Davisville (MP 168.3), where the speed changes to 90/40 on Track 1 and 95/40 on Track 2,  there is extra track on the east side and a line from the US Navy Construction Battalion Base trails in on the east side, an angled road bridge overhead, a divided highway to the east that then bridges over to the west, detectors at MP 168.7, a road bridge overhead, and a street alongside to the east, that then curves away.

The line turns just west of due north at the signals at East Greenwich (MP 171.7), where speeds change to 85/50 on both tracks, past a bridge over a road, an ocean inlet alongside to the east, a bridge over a road, that same inlet alongside again, and a bridge over a road, Apponaug, where it turns just east of due north again, a bridge over a river, a bridge over a road, dual road bridges overhead, signals on a signal bridge, MP 175.0, where the passenger speed rises to 90 mph on Track 1 and 110 mph on Track 2, a bridge over a road, detectors at MP 175.3, Green (MP 175.5), a former spur from industry trailing in from the east, a road bridge overhead, MP 176.0, where the passenger speed on Track 1 rises to 110 mph, Mills Grove, where a line to Pontiac once headed west, four yard tracks on the east side, MP 178.0, where the passenger speed on Track 2 drops to 90 mph, and dual road bridges overhead.

A line from Howard once trailed in on the west side at Norwood, and the main line passes a road bridge overhead, MP 180.0, where the passenger speed on Track 1 drops to 90 mph, Cranston (MP 181.2), where a line to Bellefont once headed east (and a spur still does), a wide road bridge overhead, a road bridge overhead, signals, and speeds on both tracks drop to 50/30 as the line turns just west of due north, a road bridge overhead, a line from the harbor trailing in on the east side, a road bridge overhead, an angled road bridge overhead, a turn just east of due north at Arlington where a line once trailed in on the west side, a road bridge overhead, a divided highway on the east side, three road bridges overhead, an angled road bridge overhead, a location where a branch to Olneyville once headed west, signals, Atwells (MP 184.2), where the line turns just north of due east and a branch once trailed in from the northwest, a street alongside to the west, a road bridge overhead with curving ramps to the north and south (on the east side), a major highway intersection with many ramps on the east side and bridging overhead, a "tunnel" under the city center, the passenger station, with island platform between the tracks in the "tunnel" at Providence (MP 185.1), signals for the junction, three road bridges overhead, a street alongside to the east, and the junction at ORMS (MP 185.6) with the Washington Secondary Track and the Providence & Worcester Main Line, heading east, as the Boston line turns north.
