Minot/Surrey to Grand Forks

At the junction at Surrey (MP 196.3), the main direct, but single track, freight line to Fargo heads away east-southeast, while the single track passenger line to Rugby and Grand Forks continues due east. This line is operated by Track Warrant Control (TWC) with Automatic Block Signals (ABS), and has a speed limit of 60-40 at this point, with extra track to the south, past a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 194.9, a dirt track grade crossing, US 2 alongside to the south, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 193.7, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, and a dirt road grade crossing.

There is a 3,621 ft. south side siding at Norwich (MP 188.9), with extra track to silos to the south, within the siding, Intermediate Signals, two dirt road grade crossings, Intermediate Signals, two dirt road grade crossings, Intermediate Signals, a dirt track grade crossing, a marsh to the south, and a dirt road grade crossing becoming a dirt road alongside to the north, and the line turns just north of east, and passes a grade crossing, the 3,574 ft. south side siding at Granville (MP 182.0), with extra track for silos to the south, within the siding, where a branch once trailed in from the northwest, Intermediate Signals, two dirt road grade crossings, Intermediate Signals, a bridge over drainage, two dirt track grade crossings, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, Riga, a detector at MP 170.1, US 2 alongside to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, extra track to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, and Denbigh.

The speed limit falls to 50-40 from MP 167 to 163.4, past a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, and rises again to 60-40 past a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, two bridges over a "river", the 8,882 ft. south siding at Towner (MP 161.3), where another branch once trailed in from the north-northwest, with a grade crossing, silos to the south, a bridge over a street, extra track to the south, a dirt track grade crossing and a dirt road grade crossing, all within the siding, Intermediate Signals at MP 159.x, a dirt road grade crossing, and US 2 alongside to the south, and turns east past a dirt track grade crossing, two dirt road grade crossings, ponds to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, a pond to the south, two dirt track grade crossings, Intermediate Signals, Berwick, two dirt road grade crossings, a dirt track grade crossing, and the 3,586 ft. siding at Tunbridge (MP 147.6), with extra track to silos to the south.

 The speed limit falls to 50-40 at MP 147.0, past three dirt road grade crossings, a pond to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, and a wye on the north side where a branch from Souris trails in from the north-northwest, to the 6,286 ft. north side siding at Rugby (MP 142.4), where there is a dirt road grade crossing, a bridge over a street, the brick depot and brick platform are on the south side of the tracks, with shuttle-enabled rail-served grain elevators on the north side, a grade crossing, and extra track to the south, all within the siding.

The line continues east past a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a dirt road grade crossing, a pond to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 137.5, a detector at MP 137.4,  Fero, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a pond to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, extra track to the south at Pleasant Lake (MP 133.4), a dirt track grade crossing, a jog southeast past a dirt road grade crossing, and then east again, past a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a pond to the south, an angled dirt road grade crossing, Knox (MP 127.8),  a pond to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, a turn east-southeast, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, the 4,540 ft. north side siding with shuttle-enabled rail-served grain elevators on the north side at York (MP 121.9), where a branch from Wolford trails in from the north-northwest, two dirt road grade crossings, a road (not US 2) to the south, US 2 approaching from the south, two dirt road grade crossings, and the 8,214 ft. north side siding at Leeds (MP 115.7), with a dirt track grade crossing within the siding, where a Northern Pacific line to Jamestown once headed south and a spur still does.

The speed limit rises to 79-50 at MP 114.0, past a dirt road grade crossing, a detector at MP 111.5, Intermediate Signals at MP 111.x, Niles, where tehre is a large elevator complex with a balloon track on the north side, a grade crossing, two dirt road grade crossings, and Intermediate Signals at MP 107.5, and falls to 70-50 from MP 105.5 to 105.2, as the line turns southeast, rising again to 79-50 past two dirt road grade crossings, an angled road bridge overhead, the 6,511 ft. south siding at Church's Ferry (MP 104.2), with two extra tracks to the south of the siding, where a branch from Rolla trails in from the north, a pond to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, a pond to the south, a dirt track grade crossing, a pond to the south, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, an angled dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a pond to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, extra track for silos to the south at Penn, Intermediate Signals, a pond to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, a pond to the south, US 2 alongside to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt rack grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, ponds to the south, Intermediate Signals, Grand Harbor, a detector at MP 92.5, two dirt track grade crossings, and a location where there was once an acute-angled flat crossing with an erstwhile Soo Line branch.

The speed limit falls to 60-40 at MP 87.2, with the end of the still-extant part of the Soo Line branch just to the north, Intermediate Signals, two dirt road grade crossings, US 2 alongside to the south, and a grade crossing, and 30 mph at MP 85.8, past the start of an extra track to the south, three more extra tracks to the south, a bridge over a road in town, and the depot and platform to the north with the number of extra tracks to the south down to two, as the line passes through Devilís Lake (MP 85.3), with shuttle-enabled rail-served grain elevators, where a branch from Hansboro once trailed in from the north, a branch to Chatauqua Assembly once headed southwest, and a branch to Nolan once headed south.

The line turns east again, past a bridge over a road, Intermediate Signals at MP 84.x, and a grade crossing in town, and the speed limit rises to 70-50 at MP 84.4, past a detector at MP 83.9, a grade crossing, a pond to the south, a dirt track grade crossing, a pond to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a lake to the south, ponds to the south, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, Keith (MP 80.1), where there is a spur, a pond to the south, two dirt track grade crossings, a lake to the south, and a dirt road grade crossing, and drops to 60-50 at MP 76.0, past silos to the south, a grade crossing, extra track to the south, Crary (MP 74.5), a dirt track grade crossing, ponds to the south, two dirt road grade crossings, a pond to the south, a grade crossing, extra track for silos to the south, Doyon (MP 69.6), a dirt road grade crossing, a pond to the south, and Intermediate Signals at MP 69.x,  rising again to 70-60 at MP 69.0.

There is a dirt road grade crossing, US 2 to the south, a dirt track grade crossing, a pond to the south, Bartlett, a dirt road to the south, a pond to the south, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a pond to the south, two dirt track grade crossings, Intermediate Signals, a large pond to the south, two dirt track grade crossings, the 8,908 ft. south side siding, with 52-car rail-served grain facilities on the south side, at Lakota (MP 60.7), with two grade crossings and a dirt road grade crossing within the siding, where a branch from Sarles trails in from the north, a pond to the south, a detector at MP 59.x, two dirt road grade crossings, Intermediate Signals at MP 58.x, a dirt road grade crossing, a road alongside to the south, Mapes, Intermediate Signals at MP 56.x, a dirt road grade crossing, a pond to the south, a dirt road alongside to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 84.x, two dirt track grade crossings, Intermediate Signals at MP 52.x, , a dirt track grade crossing, and the 8,883 ft. siding, with 52-car rail-served grain facilities on the south side, at Michigan (MP 50.3), with a grade crossing within the siding.

The line continues just south of due east, past two ponds to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, a pond to the south, a dirt road grade crossing, three ponds to the south, Petersburg (MP 44.5), a grade crossing, Inkster (MP 43.5), where there is an extra track on the south side serving grain silos on the south side on both sides of the grade crossing in town, a lake to the south, a grade crossing, Orr (MP 39.2), where there is an extra track on the north side, Niagara (MP 38.3), and a detector at MP 38.2,  and the line turns southeast past Shawnee, a road alongside to the south, three dirt road grade crossings, McCanna (MP 32.7), where there is an extra track on the north side, and the Forest River Bean Plant Spur (MP 32.0), and east past MP 31.5, a dirt road grade crossing, MP 29.5, and seven dirt road grade crossings. 

The speed limit falls to 65-50 at MP 27.1, past Hannah Junction (MP 26.7), where a line from Conway once trailed in from the north, and the line turns southeast to the 9,288 ft. siding at Larimore (MP 24.3), with old depot on the north side, and town on the north side, where a line heads south to Portland and Mayville, and east past MP 23.7, where the speed limit rises to 79-50, Intermediate Signals, three dirt road grade crossings, MP 22.3, where it falls to 70-50, MP 22.0, where it rises again to 79-50, three dirt track grade crossings, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, MP 19.1, where it falls to 70-50, and MP 18.8, where it returns to 79-50, a road alongside to the north, a grade crossing, a detector, Intermediate Signals, Arvilla (MP 18.3), three bridges over streams, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, the 7,581 ft. south side siding at Emerado (MP 12.3), whence a spur once headed north (and a stub still does, from MP 12.8) to Grand Forks Air Force Base, grain elevators on the south side, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a bridge over a stream, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a dirt road grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a dirt road gr de crossing, Intermediate Signals, a dirt road grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a dirt track grade crossing, , two dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, and Powell (MP 0.9), with shuttle-enabled rail-served grain elevators, to West Grand Forks (MP 0.4), where the passenger line turns south while the freight line to Duluth continues due east.
