The BNSF Northern Coal Route takes the former CB&Q Billings line northwest, and then turns east on the former Northern Pacific main line, using that route all the way either to Duluth or the Twin Cities.
Some coal trains take the former Milwaukee Road, now run by BNSF, east from Terry, and through South Dakota (coal trains running as far as Big Stone only):
Terry to Appleton/Benson
other trains from which then continue on the former Great Northern.
The route to Duluth (or Superior) separates from the former NP Twin Cities line at Staples:
Staples to Carlton
Carlton to Saunders
Saunders to Duluth
ex-GN
University to Minneapolis Junction
Minneapolis Junction to St. Anthony
St. Anthony to Westminster
Some coal trains transfer to the Canadian Pacific (former Milwaukee) east of St. Paul, destined for the Columbia Power Plant south of Portage, WI.
