Coast Route Traffic(s)

 

·         Passenger

Amtrak 11 and 14 (the Coast Starlight) cover the entire distance. Regional trains run between Los Angeles and Goleta (with one service extended to San Luis Obispo), between San Jose and Sacramento (with some services extended to Roseville and Colfax), and between Eugene and Seattle.

Metrolink commuter trains run between Los Angeles and Oxnard. Caltrain commuter trains run between Gilroy and San Francisco (diverging from the Amtrak route at Santa Clara, just north of San Jose). There are plans for “Sounder” commuter trains between Seattle and Tacoma.

·         Intermodal

On the Coast Route, in 2005 (and since at least 2002), there was one regularly seen intermodal schedule, train ILCOA (and the reverse?) between Los Angeles (Shops Yard) and Oakland, along with bare table trains ISELBR between Seattle and Long Beach (ICTF) and IOALBR between Oakland and Long Beach (ICTF).

In 2005, UP automotive trains seen on the Coast Line included: 
AOADO (and the reverse?) between Oakland and Dolores
AWSDO (and the reverse?) between Warm Springs and Dolores
AMLMI (and the reverse?) between Mira Loma and Milpitas

On the Coast Route, in 2005 (and for some years previously), the specially-constructed "oil cans" unit trains provided loaded oil service OWPDO from the oil fields at Wunpost to Dolores, and the empty reverse ODOWP.

On the Coast Route, in 2002, just a few regular manifest schedules were regularly seen:
MWCEU (and the reverse?) between West Colton and Eugene
QRVDO (and the reverse?) between Roseville and Dolores (in the LA/LB Harbor Area)
QRVML (and the reverse?) between Roseville and Mira Loma

In 2005, UP manifests seen on the Coast Line included:
QRVDO (and the reverse QDORV) between Roseville and Dolores (in the LA/LB Harbor Area)
QRVML (and the reverse?) between Roseville and Mira Loma
MWCPT (and the reverse MPTWC) between West Colton and Portland
MDORV (and the reverse?)  between Dolores and Roseville (reverse of QRVDO?)
MGMPT (and the reverse?) between Gemco (San Fernando Valley) and Portland
