Coos Bay Branch

The route is divided into the following subdivisions:

·        CORP Coos Bay subdivision from Eugene to Coquilla

The former SP Coos Bay branch has been operated by the Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad (CORP) since January 1st, 1995, in common with a number of other former SP lines in central and southern Oregon. The single-track line is run as Yard Limits at either end, and by Track Warrant Control between Danebo and Lakeside. Leaving the ex-SP main line due westward at the wye at Eugene Yard (MP 648.4 from San Francisco), there is a north-south road bridge overhead within the wye, crossing the north and south legs separately, there is a grade crossing west of the wye, and lumber mills on both the north and south sides of the line. The line crosses the former Oregon Electric line (now operated by the Portland & Western) at PNWR Crossing (MP 649.3), there is a lumber mill on the north side, a road bridge overhead, a lumber mill on the south side , a grade crossing, a lumber mill on the north side and then lumber mills both to the north and south, a grade crossing. a rail-served wood products factory on the north side, a bridge over a stream, a road bridge overhead, a grade crossing, and a rail-served lumber mill on the north side.

The line changes operations from UP to CORP and exits yard limits (with a concomitant rise in track speed from 10 mph to 25 mph) at the 2,850 ft. siding at Danebo (MP 651.6). A bicycle path crosses the line at grade, a road bridge passes overhead, there is a bridge over a river and a road running parallel on the north side, the line passes through Finn (MP 652.8), where there is a spur, and passes a detector at MP 653.8. There is a grade crossing in a small town, a road bridge overhead, a lake on the north side of the track (but not adjacent to the line), a bridge over a stream, the speed limit drops from 25 mph to 10 mph, Veneta (MP 660.5), a river on the south side, another lake on the north side, a through truss bridge over the river, another through truss bridge, dating from 1912, over the river, yet another through truss bridge, this one dating from 1902, over the river, a lumber mill on the north side with large piles of huge logs, another through truss bridge over the river, and Noti (MP 665.3).

West of Noti, the tress form an almost complete canopy over the line, which makes a large counter-clockwise semi-circle, passing over a high bridge over both road and stream to Vaughn (MP 668.3), where a logging railroad or SP spur once headed south, the line makes a clockwise horseshoe curve back to the west, and passes through 2,487 ft. tunnel 13 (MP 669.5) the 610 ft. summit of the line, Fegg (MP 671.5), at 580 ft. elevation, where the speed limit rises to 25 mph, Watson, Shannon, at 430 ft. elevation, where the speed limit falls to 10 mph again and the line turns south, there is a bridge across a river, Globe, a through truss bridge across the river, the line turns west again, and passes under a road bridge and through 471 ft. tunnel 14 (MP 681.1). There is a covered road bridge over the river on the north side, meadows on the north side among the trees, a through truss bridge across the river which then runs on the south side, a grade crossing, a road alongside to the north, another grade crossing, and Asta.

There is another through truss bridge across the river; the line turns north past a grade crossing to Richardson (MP 685.0), and another grade crossing. There are then curves back to the east, north again, and west again, through thick forests; there are three more through truss bridges over the river along this stretch, ending with a road on the north side and the river to the south, with the line descending through Nekoma (MP 689), along the north hillside, with trees to the south. There is another grade crossing at Swisshome (MP 697.1), where the speed limit drops to 10 mph, there is a through truss bridge over a side river, and the line passes Siuslaw (MP 697.8), where the line speed rises to 25 mph again. There is a lumber mill on both sides of the line, with a sawdust holder cone on the north side, followed by a corrugated iron shed on the north side of the line, the remains of another lumber mill There are houses between rail and road on the north side of the line.

There is a spur at Tide (MP 699.2), a grade crossing takes the road from the north side of the line to the south side, the line turns southwest at Rainrock and southeast at Firo. In places, there are houses on the south side of the road running just south of the line, but on the north side of the river. Much of the line is between rows of trees whose branches arch over the line, and there is a 4,680 ft. siding at Mapleton (MP 705.3) as the line turns south and then west again, past some houses up a hill on the north side and a large sawmill on the south side where there is a gap between the road and the river beyond, with a jog southward through Beck (MP 709.0), where the road is on the south/east side of the line, with the river on the south/east side of it, and then back west again.

There is a curve to the southwest before the 4,520 ft. siding at Wendson (MP 715.0), where the road is on the southeast side of the line, with the river on the southeast side of it, and a turn to the south at Cushman (MP 716.3) across the Siuslaw River Drawbridge (MP 716.4), where the speed limit drops to 10 mph until after Kroll. After a short spell along the east aide of the estuary, the line passes through 2,143 ft. tunnel 15 (MP 720.7), a turn southeast through Canary (MP 721.3), a turn south-southwest at 617 ft. tunnel 16 (MP 721.5), a spur for B&B alongside a small lake to the west of the line, 1,200 ft. tunnel 17 (MP 727.7), a spur at Ada (MP 728.1), Booth as the line leaves the lake and then passes alongside and/or over another to Kroll (MP 732.8), a spur at MP 734.4, 1,552 ft. tunnel 18 (MP 734.5), where the line turns southeast, Franz, where the line turns south-southwest again and a 2,376 ft. siding at Gardiner Junction (MP 738.8), where an erstwhile short line to Gardiner headed off northwest.

Crossing the Umpqua River as the speed limit drops to 10 mph again, the line passes a 2,480 ft. siding at Reedsport (MP 740.4) and turns southeast with a 25 mph speed limit, then turns sout-southwest again, past a spur at Tharp (MP 745.0) and through 4,184 ft. tunnel 19 (MP 745.6), alongside a lake to the line’s east, through 870 ft. tunnel 20 (MP 750.1) and 475 ft. tunnel 21 (MP 751.2) to Lakeside (MP 752.1), where the line turns west for a short distance and then south through Neal to the 2,980 ft. siding at Hauser (MP 759.3), where TWC ends, yard limits begin, and the speed limit thus drops to 10 mph for the rest of the branch.. At Rogers, the line reaches a large estuary (“Coos Bay”) on the east side of the line, passes the 2,500 ft. siding at Cordes (MP 763.0), crosses the estuary to North Bend (MP 765.6) and runs along the east side of the bay through Coos Bay (MP 768.9) and Marshfield, and then up the west side of a river through McCormac (MP 770.5), Cleo, Hayden (MP 773.1) and Overland. Passing over a watershed at Chrome (MP 781.2), where logging lines once headed east and west, the line reaches Cedar Point and the current end of track at Coquilla (MP 785.5). A logging railroad once headed east from here, and the branch once continued south to Powers.
