Grand Rapids to Carlton

From Grand Rapids (MP 112.1), on the Mississippi River, where there are yard tracks north and south of the main line, grade crossings at 2nd Avenue, NW (MP 111.7) and 1st Avenue, NW (MP 111.63), a wooden depot south of the line (now in use by the Chamber of Commerce), a grade crossing at MP 111.5, and a grade crossing at 1st Avenue, NE (MP 111.47), the single track, Track Warrant Control, Automatic Block Signals, line, with maximum speed 50 mph, heads east, past US 2 to the south, an angled grade crossing (US 2?), extra track to the south, a grade crossing, a grade crossing at 7th Anue, SE, Intermediate Signals, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, and US 2 on the north side, and then east-southeast past a grade crossing, a bridge over a "river" in the woods, the 7,036 ft. north side siding from West Gunn (MP 108.4), with two extra tracks to the north of the siding, the start of CTC, the west and east legs of the wye with the Casco sub. heading away north at Gunn, and a bridge over angled US 2 within the wye, to East Gunn (MP 106.9).

There are two dirt track grade crossings, a detector at MP 105.0, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, Blackberry, the 9,917 ft. south side siding from West Philbin (MP 102.0) past US 2 alongside to the south, Philbin (MP 101.0), and a dirt track grade crossing, to East Philbin (MP 100.0), a grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, Warba, where the line turns southeast, US 2 just off to the south, a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, the 9,893 ft. south side siding from West Swan River (MP 92.4) past a dirt road grade crossing and Swan River (MP 92.1), where an erstwhile Great Northern line once crossed on the flat to East Swan River (MP 90.3), Wawina (MP 88.9), Intermediate Signals at MP 87.9, a grade crossing, open marshland with woods as the line crosses the watershed between the Mississippi River and the St. Louis River (Great Lakes), Intermediate Signals at MP 85.9, the 9,216 ft. siding from West Island (MP 83.9) past Island (MP 82.2) to East Island (MP 82.1), and Mirbat (MP 81.0).

There is a detector at MP 78.0, as the line turns south-southeast, to follow the route of the St. Louis River to its east, past a bridge over a stream, a dirt road grade crossing, Floodwood (MP 75.6), the 9,785 ft. north side siding from West Floodwood (MP 75.0), past a grade crossing, to East Floodwood (MP 73.0), a bridge over a stream, Gowan, a turn northeast, following the river, a gated dirt track grade crossing, US 2 alongside to the south, and then curvily east, still following the river, past Intermediate Signals, Pawpoore's, and extra track on the north side, to the 10,480 ft. north sidesiding from West Brookston (MP 58.0) past extra track on the south side at the west end, Brookston Gravel Pit (MP 57.8), a grade crossing at MP 57.7, and a bridge over a stream, to East Brookston (MP 55.9), where a former GN branch trails in from the north.

An erstwhile DM&IR line once trailed in from the north at Stony Brook Junction, and the line passes a road bridge overhead, the St. Louis River beyond the trees on the north side, all the way to Cloquet, a detector at MP 53.4, a turn curvily south, still following the river, Flint Gravel Pit, a turn southeast, Brevator, where an erstwhile Duluth & Northeastern Railroad line once left to the east, and the 7,869 ft. north side siding, in the woods, from West Draco (MP 50.9), past Draco (MP 50.0) to East Draco (MP 49.2).

The line turns east, still following the river, just west of due south, east past Intermediate Signals, southwest, with the route of an erstwhile DNE line joining on the other side of the river, and just east of due south, all still following the river, past West Yard on the east side of the line, where the former D&NE line ended, turning east past Cloquet (MP 41.1), a grade crossing in town, a road bridge overhead, a street adjacent to the south, two grade crossings in town, a large Sappi paper mill on the north side with three or four extra tracks serving it, a grade crossing, and a huge Specialty Minerals Inc. limestone processing plant on the north side, turning south-southeast, where an erstwhile Duluth & Winnipeg Railway line once continued east, following the river valley.

The Minnesota & North Wisconsin once headed east at Scanlon, and the line turns curvily south-southwest, past MP 39, an angled road bridge overhead, a gated dirt road grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, and Intermediate Signals, and then south, with a dirt road alongside to the west, past a grade crossing, to Carlton Junction (MP 35.0), the junction between the Lakes subdivision, coming from the north and the single track, former Northern Pacific, Brainerd sub. coming from the west, and east-southeast to the 9,700 ft. north side siding from West Chub Lake (MP 34.9) past a grade crossing and Chub Lake (MP 34.0). to East Chub Lake (MP 33.0).
