West Junction to Tower 13 (Eureka)

From West Junction (MP 375.7), the Two Main Tracks, CTC, 40 mph line curves to the north on the west to north leg of the wye, past a grade crossing on the wye, North Junction (MP 374.8), where the other leg of the wye from East Junction (MP 375.6) trails in, two grade crossings, dual Interstate (I-610) bridges overhead, with grade crossing surrounding them, a bridge over a drainage channel, Intermediate Signals at MP 373.0, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 371.9, crossovers at Bissonet (MP 371.5), a grade crossing, a bridge over a divided road, a divided highway grade crossing, Bellaire Junction (MP 370.4), where the SA&AP once crossed at grade, a spur heading west into an electricity plant, a road bridge overhead, a wide road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals at MP 369.0, a divided highway grade crossing, a grade crossing, a holdout signal at West Eureka (MP 368.4), a grade crossing, a bridge over a divided road, a divided highway grade crossing, a grade crossing, a track trailing in on the east side, a bridge over I-10, a bridge over a divided highway, and a detector at MP 366.4, where the speed limit falls to 25 mph, the west leg of a wye curves away north and the east leg takes the line around to the east to Eureka (Tower 13), where the former MKT main line trails in from the west, and a UP line south from Hearne trails in from the northwest.

Tower 13 (Eureka) to Chaney Junction

Now heading east-southeast, the line gradually curves east, past a detector at MP 366.1, Boulevard Junction, where a line once curved away north, a street alongside to the north, a spur from industry trailing in on the south side, a grade crossing, a bridge over I-10 at an acute angle, a street alongside to the south, a divided highway grade crossing, seven grade crossings, east-facing Intermediate Signals at MP 363.9, a bridge over a street below, a divided highway grade crossing, and a grade crossing, to the crossovers at Chaney Junction (MP 363.5), where the speed limit is 20 mph, and a line to Tower 26 via Hardy Street yard splits off on the north side.

Chaney Junction to Tower 108

 In addition to the junction at Chaney, there is a flat crossing with the Sears Industrial Lead headed south from Niles Junction (MP 363.0) on the Hardy Street line, followed by a formerly rail-served industry on the north side, spur tracks on the south side, a grade crossing, a rail-served industry on the south side, a grade crossing, a rail-served industry on the north side, three grade crossings, a bridge over a divided street, crossovers at Depot Junction (MP 362.5), where the track into the passenger platform splits off on the south side, with an extra track on the south side, Amtrak Depot (MP 362.3), where the platform (with umbrella shed) and 1960s Southern Pacific concrete depot building are on the south side of the line (with that extra track on the south side of the platform), with two tracks north of the main platform track (with a platform south of the more southerly), a private car spur on the north side, north if the Interstate highway bridge pier, a road bridge overhead within the platform,  three tracks on the north side (with bushes growing in some of them in April, 2009), a road bridge overhead at the east end of the platform, a major highway bridge overhead, three bridges over streets below, a holdout signal at North Main Street (MP 361.7), and San Jacinto Street (Tower 108?, MP 361.6), where the depot track rejoins and a connector to North GH&H Junction curves away to the southeast.

Tower 108 to Tower 26 and Carr Street Junction

From San Jacinto Street (Tower 108?, MP 361.6), the line edges north of east, where the MKT main line once crossed at grade, past a bridge over a street, a bridge over a river, a street bridge overhead, along the west side of a river heading northeast, a grade crossing, a street bridge overhead, two grade crossings, a bridge over I-610, and three grade crossings, and turns north, past the crossovers at Maury Street (MP 360.9) and turns east northeast on the southeast quadrant of the flat crossing at Tower 26 (MP 360.6), where the line direct from Chaney Junction trails in from the west-southwest and the line north to Freight Junction continues north across the flat crossing with the Chaney Junction, to Carr Street Junction (MP 360.4), where there is a two track flat crossing with the Houston West Belt line, a grade crossing, and a connector in the southeast quadrant trails in where there was once another flat crossing with a line south to the erstwhile Union Station.

Carr Street Junction to Tower 87

From Carr Street Junction (MP 360.4), the Sunset Route heads east-northeast, past new signals turned sideways in April, 2009, an Interstate highway bridge overhead just east of the junction, with a street alongside to the south, a bridge over a street, crossovers at Bringhurst (MP 359.7), a bridge over a street, old concrete Tower 68 on the north side of the line, west of signals at MP 359.x, a holdout signal at Waco Street (MP 359.3 on track 2), West Creosote (MP 359.3 on track 1), a road bridge overhead, crossovers at West Lockwood (MP 358.9), where the line north from the harbor area trails in, a holdout signal at Lockwood (MP 358.7), intermodal facilities on the north and south sides of the line, crossovers at Tower 68 (MP 358.5), where another line north from the harbor area trails in.

Englewood Yard begins along the south side of the line, initially only two to three tracks on the south side, growing to at least 20 tracks on the south side, past a road bridge overhead, a bridge over drainage, and a grade crossing, Englewood (MP 357.4), West Settegast Junction (MP 356.9), where a northwest quadrant connector to Settegast Yard curves away northeast, and a southwest quadrant connector curves away southeast, where the speed limit falls to 30-25, as the line over the hump climbs to over 50 ft. above the surrounding ground level, and Tower 87 (MP 356.8), where there is a road bridge overhead, with the road then passing beneath the hump line, and a flat crossing with the double track Houston East Belt line, across the harbor area to Double Track Junction to the south (which also passes beneath the hump line in the yard on the south side of the Sunset Route, thus explaining the height of that line), with four to six tracks on the south side, beyond the hump line, and past Settegast and Pierce Yards to the north, with a wide road bridge overhead, nine yard tracks on the east end of the yard, and additional connectors in the northeast and southeast quadrants at East Settegast Junction (MP 356.5).

Tower 87 to Dawes

From East Settegast Junction (MP 356.5), the two track Sunset Route continues east-northeast, with speed limit rising to 50 mph, past an acute angle grade crossing, crossovers at Mesa X-over (MP 355.2), a third track on the south side, the Swift Intermodal terminal on the north side, MP 354, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, a bridge over drainage, a grade crossing,  and crossovers at Dawes (MP 353.0), where the line reduces to single track.
