Flomaton to Chattahoochee

From a wye with the M&M subdivision heading east-west at Flomaton (MP 607.0), the single track, DTC, line heads south, with overall line speed limit 59 mph for passenger trains and 49 mph for freight trains (i.e., it is "dark territory" with no signals), with a restricted speed of 15 mph initially, and then 20 mph from MP 607.0, past the end of Yard Limits and start of the Flomaton Block (MP 607.2), across the state line from Alabama into Florida and past Tarzan, where the line turns south-southwest MP 607.4, where the speed limit rises to 40 mph, Century, where the Escambia Railroad once trailed in on the west side, MP 608.4, where passenger speeds rise to 59 mph, the end of the Flomaton Block and the start of the Molino Block (MP 612.0), where passenger speeds fall to 50 mph and freights speeds rise to 49 mph, and there is a detector, a north-facing spur at Bluff Springs (MP 612.4), and a south-facing spur at McDavid (MP 617.4).

The line turns south again, past Pine Barren and Barth, jogs southeast past the 3,905 ft. west side siding at Molino (MP 627.5), where the Molino Block ends (MP 627.9) and the Stella Block starts, and then curvily south past a detector at Quinette (MP 631.6), MP 633.0, where passenger speeds rise to 59 mph, Stella, the end of the Stella Block (MP 634.0) and the start of the Gonzales Block, the 3,245 ft. west side siding, with a connection to an Alabama & Gulf Coast line on the west side, at Cantonment (MP 635.8), where the line turns just east of due south, MP 637.0, where speeds fall to 50/35, MP 638.2, where full line speeds resume, the 5,830 ft. east side siding at Gonzalez (MP 638.4), where the Monsanto lead trails in on the east side (and there is a connection to the AGC on the west side), the Gonzales block ends (MP 639.5) and the Olive Block starts.

There is a south-facing spur at Olive (MP 644.0), the Olive Block ends (MP 645.0) and Yard Limits start, Brent, a connector from the AGC trailing in, the yard on the east side at Goulding (MP 648.2), road crossings at Ninth Avenue and Fourteenth Avenue, a speed limit of 15 mph on the sharp turn to the east between MP 650.2 and MP 650.3, the connection heading away to Pensacola Port, on the south side of the curve, Pensacola, where there is a passenger station, road crossings at  Gadsden Street, Gonzales Street, Blount Street and Falafox Street, a bridge over an inlet, bringing the line along the northwest shore of Pensacola Bay, a turn curvily north-northeast, following the shoreline, MP 652.1, where Yard Limits end and the Yniestra Block starts, and the speed limit becomes 40/25, MP 652.5, where the passenger speed limit rises to 50 mph, MP 655.8, where the passenger speed limit falls to 35 mph, a detector at Bohemia (MP 656.7), where the line turns north MP 657.4, where the passenger speed limit falls to 30 mph, the 1,100 ft. south (east) side siding at Yniestra (MP 658.6), where the Yniestra Block ends (MP 658.5) and the Pace Block starts, and an east-facing spur at Laura Point (MP 659.5), where speed limits rise to 59/40.

The line turns east-northeast, past MP 661.6, where passenger speeds fall to 40 mph, and crosses Pensacola Bay, turning north-northeast along the shoreline on the east side of the bridge, past MP 662.5, where full line speeds resume and the line turns northeast, away from the bay, the 1,980 ft. north side siding at Pace (MP 663.3), where the Pace Block ends (MP 662.0) and the Avalon Block starts, the wye on the north side with industrial trackage at Baychem (MP 663.8), the end of the Avalon Block (MP 666.0) and the start of the Floridale Block, a west-facing spur at Gault City (MP 667.3), a detector at Bagdad (MP 668.6), Bagdad junction, where a short line once left on the north side, MP 670.1, where passenger speeds fall to 50 mph, the 1,980 ft. south side siding at Milton (MP 670.3), and the Blackwater River Drawbridge (MP 670.5), with speed limit 30/25.

Speed limits rise to 45/30 at MP 670.6, as the line turns just north of due east, past MP 671.2, where full line speeds resume, a detector at MP 677.4, and east-northeast, past a west-facing spur at Harold (MP 680.0), the 11,000 ft. south side siding at Floridale (MP 681.2), where the Floridale Block ends (MP 682.9) and the Galliver Block starts, Holts, a turn to the east, a detector at MP 691.5, the 1,980 ft. north side siding at Galliver (MP 691.6), where a short line once headed north, MP 692.6, where the speed limit falls to 50/45, MP 694.5, where the passenger speed limit rises to 55 mph and the line turns east-northeast, the end of the Galliver Block (MP 696.0) and the start of the Crestview Block, Milligan, MP 696.5, where speed limits fall to 40/35 as the line turns east and then northeast, Griffith, MP 698.5, where  the freight speed limit falls to 30 mph as the line turns east, MP 699.5, where the passenger speed limit falls to 35 mph for the first curve of an s-bend, MP 700.0, where the passenger speed limit falls to 30 mph for the second curve of the s-bend, a detector at MP 700.3, and a west-facing spur at Crestview (MP 700.9), where there is a passenger station (supposedly serving Fort Walton Beach to the south), and a shortline once left to the north.

The line heads just south of due east MP 701.2, where speed limits rise to 55/40, the end of the Crestview Block (MP 703.0) and the start of the Deerland Block, MP 703.2, where the passenger speed limit falls to 40 mph, MP 703.5, where the passenger speed limit rises to 45 mph, a turn north and then back curvily east, MP 706.8, where full line speeds resume, an east-facing spur at Deerland (MP 709.6), a passenger speed limit of 50 mph from MP 713.0 to MP 713.2, the 2,530 ft. south side siding at Mossy Head (MP 716.5), where a line to Eglin AFB heads south from a wye with legs at each end of the siding, the end of the Deerland Block (MP 714.0) and the start of the Sellers Block, the 8,965 ft. south side siding at Sellers (MP 718.8), where the Sellers block ends (MP 719.7) and the DeFuniak Springs Block starts, a detector at Mavis (MP 722.6), MP 729.1, where the speed limit falls to 30 mph, the 2,695 ft. north side siding at De Funiak Springs (MP 729.7), where there is a spur on the south side, the DeFuniak Springs Block ends (MP 730.0) and the Ponce de Leon Block starts, MP 729.8 (within the siding), where the speed limit rises to 40 mph, MP 730.8, where full line speeds resume, Koerber, Argyle, and MP 735.0, where the speed limit falls to 45 mph for a particulalry curvy section.

The Ponce de Leon Block ends and the Westville Block starts at Ponce de Leon (MP 741.1), where the line turns curvily east-northeast, past MP 742.9, where the passenger speed limit rises to 45 mph, MP 744.1, where the passenger speed limit rises to 55 mph, a detector at MP 744.3 and a turn curvily east past MP 746.1, where the passenger speed limit falls to 45 mph, MP 747.1, where the freight speed limit falls to 40 mph, MP 747.6, where speed limits rise to 55/45, the 1,760 ft. north side siding at Westville (MP 747.7), where the Westville Block ends and the Bonifay Block starts, MP 747.8, where the freight speed limit rises to full line speed, MP 747.9, where the passenger speed limit rises to full line speed, a double-ended spur at Caryville (MP 750.0), MP 751.9, where the passenger speed limit falls to 50 mph, MP 752.3, where full line speeds resume, an east-facing spur at Bonifay (MP 758.0), MP 759.0, where the Bonifay Block ends and the Chipley Block starts, a detector at Hulaw (MP 763.2), and MP 766.1, where the speed limit falls to 30 mph.

There is a passenger station at the 11,820 ft. south side sidings at Chipley (MP 767.2), where the Chipley Block ends (MP 769.2) and the Cottondale Block starts, and a shortline from South Port once trailed in, and the line continues east, past MP 767.6, where full line speeds resume, a passenger speed limit of 50 mph between MP 776.3 and MP 777.7 for a flat crossing with the Atlanta & St. Andrews Bay, the US 231 road crossing (MP 776.6), and the 2,805 ft. south side siding at Cottondale (MP 776.7), where there is a spur on the north side, the Cottondale Block ends (MP 777.1) and the Cypress Block starts, a detector at Lime Rock (MP 781.9), where the line turns southeast, a west-facing spur at Fairgrounds (MP 784.7), the south side siding at Marianna (MP 785.9), where there is a spur on the north side and a shortline once headed south.

The line turns east again, with a passenger speed limit of 55 mph between MP 787.3 and MP 787.6, past a west-facing spur at Cypress (MP 796.6), where the Cypress Block ends (MP 796.7) and the Sneads Block starts, a west-facing spur at Grand Ridge (MP 800.0), a detector at MP 801.5, a passenger speed limit of 50 mph between MP 803.3 and MP 803.8, MP 805.0, where the Sneads Block ends and the Boykin Block starts, a passenger speed limit of 55 mph between MP 805.9 and MP 806.2, the 2,695 ft. north side siding at Boykin (MP 808.6), where the Boykin Block ends (MP 808.0), Yard Limits start, and there is a yard and a spur on the south side to the Gulf Power Scholtz Power Plant, the Appalachicola River Drawbridge (MP 809.7), where the speed limit is 20 mph across the bridge, and the end-on junction with a former SAL line at Chattahoochee (MP 811.5), where an ACL line once left on the north side and the Apalachicola Northern starts and runs parallel, to the east, on the south side.

The countryside in this area is a low-lying mixture of wetlands and watercourses, very similar to the bayou country in east Texas and southern Louisiana. There are subtle changes along the line, sometimes on somewhat higher, drier ground, sometimes in actual swamp country.
